Cazenove Capital’s Private Investor Conference 2019: Mission Led Investment in Scotland

A majority of investors plan to put a greater proportion of their wealth into sustainable investments in future, according to an audience poll* conducted at Cazenove Capital’s annual Private Investor Conference 2019 in Edinburgh last week.

Over 70% of the audience, made up largely of private investors, stated an intention to invest a higher proportion of their assets with sustainability in mind.

An even larger majority – 90% of attendees – indicated that they wanted more information about sustainable investment opportunities.

This year’s conference focused on “Mission Led Investment in Scotland”, exploring the importance of investing for profit with purpose. It highlighted how private investors can involve themselves in social enterprise and responsible investing.

A varied line-up of speakers, including entrepreneurs and angel investors, addressed topics ranging from capital-raising to specific new technologies associated with natural resource use or food production. Along with Cleo Fitzsimons, Cazenove Capital’s Responsible Investment Manager, they demonstrated that responsible investing is no longer a peripheral activity for a minority of investors – but a mainstream choice for many.

This was reflected in the audience’s poll results.

Bob Hair, Head of Cazenove Capital in Edinburgh, commented:

“Investors want to see corporate practices that reflect their personal values. A critical factor for measuring the success of a modern business is the approach it takes toward society and the environment – and investors want evidence of positive contributions.

Audience members were polled on a number of questions throughout the day, featuring both sustainability and entrepreneurship in Scotland, with some notable results. 90% of our audience members highlighted the lack of available information on sustainable investment in Scotland, whilst 72% stated that, even so, it was their intention to invest a higher proportion of their assets sustainably in the future.

“Such results emphasise the challenges facing sustainable investment as it becomes mainstream, but encouragingly, many ESG based investment strategies are proving to outperform more traditional investment portfolios.”

The conference utilised Cazenove Capital’s growing entrepreneurs network, which provides a new way for entrepreneurs to meet and interact with each other and members of Cazenove’s dedicated entrepreneurs team. The network is used by entrepreneurs with businesses at all stages of the cycle – from start-up through to exit - and channels Cazenove’s vast experience in supporting generations of wealth creators.
